Many thanks to Steven Myrtle for suggesting a way to use libc 5.4.23 for
the installation of StarOffice 3.1.

Using the 5.4.23 library for installation removed a lot of small
annoying details when using the Star Office applications. This is a
large step forward for those of us using older C libraries for
compatibility with other applications.

There is a nit bug in setup when used with the shared library
distribution: When extracting the compressed tar file, the software is
installed as a subtree of StarOffice-3.1. However, setup used
StarOffice3.1 as the name of this directory. A symbolic link fixes the
problem immediately.

Unfortunately, there seem to be three remaining problems running the
applications with libc 5.4.23 and 5.3.12:

Printing

There doesn't appear to be a way to use printers other than those
configured when the sofware is shipped. Some standard printers as well
as my local printer, snoopy, are found. However, there doesn't appear
to be any way to specify the type of a printer. As a result, Level 3
PostScript is written to my 39 Font IBM 4019 and the printer stops the
queueing. I have the appropriate prd file from Adobe but haven't a clue
as to how to install it and identify snoopy as a printer of this type.

Daemons

Both svdaemon and svhelp refuse to run. Here's my output for svdaemon
including ldd output:

    % /usr/local/StarOffice-3.1/linux-x86/bin/svdaemon
    Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused
    unable to register (STARVIEW, STARVIEWVERS, udp).% ldd
    /usr/local/StarOffice-3.1/linux-x86/bin/svdaemon
            libtools312.so =>
    /usr/local/StarOffice-3.1/linux-x86/lib/libtools312.so
            libg++.so.27 => /usr/lib/libg++.so.27.1.4
            libstdc++.so.27 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.27.1.4
            libm.so.5 => /usr/local/StarOffice-3.1/linux-x86/lib/libm.so.5
            libc.so.5 => /usr/local/StarOffice-3.1/linux-x86/lib/libc.so.5

Here's the output for svportmap:

    % svportmap
    Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused
    unable to register (SVPORTMAP, SVPORTMAPVERSION, udp).%

I omitted the ldd output since it's consistent with the above.

I see exactly the same results when I use libc 5.3.12.

Closing Comment

While application starts are slow (when compared to Wabi and MS Word
6.0), the peformance is exceptionally good once the application is
running. The conversion of Word 6.0 documents to Star Writer format is
exceptionally good.

Thanks for a job well done to the staff at StarDivision.

Dick
