We (the SANE development team) are currently busy coding a new release.

SANE is supposed to be a universal scanner interface for Unix-like OSes.

We currently have support for (* = planned/work in progress) :

Backends (i.e. Scanner drivers) :

- Mustek type flatbed scanners
- PBM-Pseudo-Driver (demo implementation)
- DL-Meta-Backend for multiple-scanner support
* NetSane-Meta-Backend
* Developers of other scanner packages have been contacted and are checking
how to convert their drivers to SANE.

Frontends :

- Commandline-Tool
- GIMP Plugin
- GTK standalone program (= detached GIMP plugin)

This would be very nice. Progress is slow at the moment, as the main
developers do not have that much time right now.
