The program kaudioserver, which is responsible for sound in KDE, led to
system thrashing on some machines in some situations (for more
information
see KDE hangs during logout). 

For this reason, SuSE Linux 6.0 release 2 shipped with kaudioserver
disabled. 

Solution:

You can reactivate kaudioserver by editing the file
/opt/kde/bin/startkde
and removing the leading '#' character from the following lines: 

# startifthere kaudioserver
# startifthere kwmsound
