don't mind which system is better. You should use which you like and
know.

Yes. You must have configured mail transfer agent (like postfix) with
mail queue and imap protocol. You should preffer SSL imap, it's more secure.
Then configure your mail client (outlook) for server: smtp sever and imap
account is on your linux server.

Try install postfix and (maybe) mutt and posting mails localy. Works? Fine,
configure mail queue and try post mail. Mail have to stand in queue.

If you have pop3 account, you may get mails from accounts by fetchmail.
If you have many users with one account, you must forward this mails for
localy users on your server. Users get mails from your server via imap
with own login/passwd.

For automatic getting/posting mails you can write small script. This script
add to cron daemon.

Linux=UNIX SVID/Posix kernel with GNU utilities.

between Linux and HP Unix? Linux is free, HP is commercional and different
system. AFAIK HP has got their own mail server, which is compatible with
MS mail server, maybe is working with Linux too.
