Smerovanie RH [Was: Re: bw]

Vážení přátelé,

je mi poněkud smutno z anti-Red-Hat vlny, která se bez ohledu na
neobjektivní a rozporuplné prohlášení, které si můžeme přečíst, rozputala.
O jednotlivých podrobnostech jsem byl v rámci (zde zatracovaného) RH Beta
teamu informován už na začátku léta. Určitě jsem si to nevymyslel, natož
abych záměrně lhal (děkuji za cejch).

To, na co všichni nadávají, je verze s 85+ patchi od RH na GCC. RH chěli
podpořit vývoj GCC 3.0 a udělali to (všechny patche až na 2 jsou nyní v
aktuálním CVS GCC). Jistě, mohli se na to vykašlat a mohutně patchovat
staré GCC (což by bylo *velmi* kontraproduktivní). Výsledkem by bylo, že
GCC 3.0 by se dále odsunulo a byli bychom poškozeni všichni (tentokrát
doopravdy). Upozorňuji, že lidé od GCC teamu mluví o aktuální verzi v CVS
GCC a RH vydal aktuální CVS + patche (nyní do CVS už přijaté).

Nikdy jsem si nevšiml, že by lidé z RH byli kontraproduktivní, odmítali
rozumné argumenty nebo se snažili dělat něco, co by bylo proti zásadám
slušného chování nebo poškozovalo Open-Source komunitu (oni sami jsou její
součástí a velmi dbají na svoji serióznost a ctí licence GPL, LGPL, ...).
Managment nečiní u RH rozhodnutí, se kterým by jejich development team
nesouhlasil a měli bychom jim poděkovat, že platí svými penězi to, co mi
zdarma používáme a budeme dále používat.

Oba dva níže uvedené dopisy jsou od zaměstnanců firmy Red Hat (Alan Cox,
kernel hacker a Jakub Jelínek, zabývá se zejména SPARC jádrem a knihovnami
[Čech, známe ho ze sunsite.mff.cuni.cz]). Velmi prosím, abyste si je před

Myslím, že zde by měla flamewar ustat.

Debian have been shipping an alternative compilers to do kernel builds for
a couple of years at least. So now they are using 2.2 it makes a lot of
sense to spot it, and ditto with any others who do the same. If everyone
could have agreed a name for the kernel compiler that would be even
better.

As to compatibility I am told by folks working on the gnu C/C++ that
library level compatibility should be 100% between 2.96+ and 3.0 while
2.95 is an isolated incompatible pseudo-release at C++ level.

My own interest in this is the LSB, where the inability of the Gnu C++
folks to have a defined binary standard is preventing standardisation of
any C++ interfaces - both base classes and high level stuff.

for explanation why we decided to include that compiler and unlike the GCC
Steering Committee, we recommend using our gcc 2.96 for production purposes
(we would not put it into the distribution otherwise).
We never shipped GCC 2.95.2, so we don't have to be compatible in C++ with
it and both GCC 2.95.2 and our GCC 2.96 will be binary incompatible with GCC 3
(C++, C and Fortran should be binary compatible).
We're working on gcc erratas which will fix open bugzilla ids for gcc (at
least those which we have fixed already or we manage to fix in the short future).
