to je velmi divne, 
mam smbclient : Version 2.2.2debian-2
a rychlost Linux<->Linux je jen o 100kb/s mensi nezli FTP  (tj. 744 misto 850 kB/s  (jeden nahodny prenos fajlu o velikosti 3MB)
Z Okenic (W98) vice rozhodne nevytahnu.

jaky mate Vy pomer rychlosti?
zkuste si pohrat s -b (buffersize)
