Tell us some numbers in terms of what and how much you want to store 
inside the ZODB.
The magic concept for scaling issues is ZEO. Zope can mount several ZEO 
storages means
you can spread the data and load over several different clients and servers.

Replacing FileStorage with something else like BDB storage is usually 
much slower. It's hard
to beat FileStorage by performance.
