Monitor Settings ?!

I´m a rookie in these linux things so could somebody explain (Step by Step)
me how to change resolution and color depth. I don´t know which version my
linux (Gentus linux...something) is cause I got it with my Abit motherboard.
I have 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500, I couldn´t set it (closest was Voodoo 3) when the
installation asked about my video card. So if somebody could help me I´d be
very pleased.
