Seems my texlive was corrupt (had parts of 2010 + 2011).  I did

rpm -qa '*texlive*' | xargs rpm -e --nodeps
yum install '*texlive*'

(then remove a few texlive 2007 packages)

Now lyx (and latex) are working.
