That's one of the till I didn't like about rpm.  I must say I was using an
old Mandrake (7.0) so I'm sure the later ones have improved rpm.

I just installed Debian and so far I like it's installation of programs.  If
it detects an error it tell you what it was looking for and then ask you if
you want to installs the missing files.  That's assuming you have them.  If
not it appears it refuses to install if it can't find the missing files.  I
haven't had much time with Debian so I'm still learning it.
